In Husidio John Tempest’s career, he has painted many portraits of local interest in North Carolina including Carroll Hill of the original CCB family, 7-Up soda pop heiress Patty Johnson, and the late Frank Kenan (UNC-Chapel Hill football stadium named after him) along with his wife Betty of Chapel Hill. More recently, he has entered a new period of painting abstract horses, much like his ancestor Antonio Tempesta, but incorporating a twist of his own style.
Husidio John Tempest comes from a family heritage of Italian-born artists whose artistic lineage goes as far back as the 1600’s in Florence and Rome, Italy. Beginning in Florence with his ancestor Antonio Tempesta, Antonio was commissioned to paint detailed and realistic Italian soldiers on their horses in battlefield. Then John’s father, Gerard, later studied under De Chirico to experiment and incorporate spiritual light ribbons to the horses ushering in his “abstract spiritualism” era.
Today, Husidio John Tempest adds a twist to his heritage and has developed a unique expression that he calls his own. With a combination of gallantry and ribbons, John creates beautiful and elegantly designed abstract horses with bursts of color and motion. His Italian-American paintbrush still remains powerful in his Italian-influenced images in addition to his children’s and adult portraits which he is known for over the past 30 years in Italy and the States.
